Don't Let Social Media Pass You By
Of late, a friend of mine has approached me having a few queries concerning the social media strategy that his company was planning on implementing. The company is in the business of designing software for {telephone| corporations, and while I won't mention the name of the company out of politeness, I'll inform you this; that they had plenty to learn about their social media profit formula.

Their plan was to produce a company blog to engage their clients, and add usefulness to their website. Which is generally a fairly good start; a blog works very well for both of these things. However, the company was very concerned that their competition would begin to steal ideas from them through whatever information was transmitted through the web publication and decided that every article had to be approved by the head of the corporation before it could get posted. The other problem was that the website content could not discuss any of the company's products or services, once more since they had been fearful that their competition would pinch their ideas. But, they had made their blog. Thats a lot more than a good number companies had been doing.

Sorry to say, the blog was doomed headed for failure. Though they did need to start blogging, and had plans to develop a complimentary existence on Twitter, the blog content would only be visible to readers who were already valued clientele of the corporation. Which begs the question, what were they planning to tweet about?. Because each reader of the blog has to become a customer first in order to access the articles, what is the purpose of alerting the Twittersphere concerning up-to-the-minute articles, or bringing people back to their blog to start a dialogue, if only the people youve already sold to can get into it? How are you going to entice clients into a conversation of the services if you cannot talk about your products? Finally, if its a private weblog, why are you so concerned concerning the competition gaining access to it?

In essence, this business is hopping on the Social Media bandwagon without thinking it through. Maybe they do have a valid security concern, when that is the case then a channel that's all in regards to the distribution of information and ideas possibly is not the proper fit for them. I've been blogging for this little flower shop here in Houston for a little more than a year, and if I were required to articulate the single main lesson I've learned while doing it, it would be this; "the greater you communicate, the more you get back". Where corporations like this flop at Social Media is leaping in head first devoid of taking the time to develop a strategy that complements their company. Without taking a candid look at your online business, and developing a Social Media formula that works for it, it'll be akin to trying to explain to men how females think. An exercise in uselessness.
